The below is my attempt to apply the Declaration of Independence to the current president of the United States. Yes, I lifted heavily from the original Declaration. :)
When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of humankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all people are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among people, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.
Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes. But when a long train of abuses, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security. Such has been the patient sufferance of the American people; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to overthrow their government. The history of the present president of the United States is a history of repeated injuries. To prove this, let facts be submitted to a candid world.
He appointed several people with minimal knowledge of relevant policy subject matter to Cabinet positions.
He has repeatedly criticized and misrepresented protests which have opposed with firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
He believes judges should be dependent on his will alone, rather than the Constitution.
He has submitted to Congress a budget which would increase military spending by 54 billion dollars despite the fact that U.S. military expenditures already exceed the next seven largest military budgets around the world, combined.
His budget calls for cutting billions of dollars from the Environmental Protection Agency, which would strip the agency of almost all its capacity to enforce environmental laws and regulations, at a time when climate change threatens the future of humanity.
He favors big cuts to programs like food stamps and Medicaid.
He barred numerous mainstream press outlets from a White House briefing because he considered the outlets too unfriendly to the White House.
He described the press as enemies of the people because they haven’t produced endlessly fawning coverage of his presidency.
He has publicly supported a health insurance reform bill which will cause over twenty million Americans to lose their health insurance.
He signed an executive order which disgracefully bans immigration from several Muslim-majority nations, and which rightly has elicited mass protests and judicial veto.
His tax reform proposal includes enormous tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.
He has enacted an immigration policy which has ruthlessly separated family members from one another.
He has incited numerous domestic acts of hate-inspired violence with his lie-filled speeches.
In every stage of these injuries we have petitioned for redress in the most humble terms: our repeated petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A person whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a tyrant is unfit to be the president of the United States.
If his presidency continues, he will plunder our seas, ravage our coasts, increase homelessness in our towns, and destroy the future of humanity. His belligerent foreign policy will complete his works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of cruelty and perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages.
We, therefore, the people of the United States of America, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the name, and by the authority of the good people of this nation, solemnly publish and declare, that the American people are, and of right ought to be free and independent of our tyrant president; that we are absolved from all allegiance to him, and that all political power he holds ought to be totally dissolved; and that as free people, we have full power to end his presidency. And for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our sacred honor and our lives.
